This cross-Canada series of events is your one-stop-shop to receive economic insights, learn about government incentive programs and capital investment opportunities available to manufacturers, and hear-first hand technology adoption best practices from a local manufacturing leader.

Manufacturing Economic Outlook 

What’s in store for the economy in 2018? What do you need to know to forecast throughout the year and into 2019? CME’s Chief Economist Mike Holden will provide you with his manufacturing economic outlook and answer your questions.

Capital Investment and Technology Adoption 

Investment in new capital and technology is critical for Canadian industry to grow and be globally competitive. Unfortunately Canadian companies are falling behind their global competitors. Investment in manufacturing has dropped by 20 per cent in recent years.

At the same time, there are leaders in technology adoption and a range of existing supports to help companies deal with the rapid changes going on today that can be leveraged by Canadian companies. To engage companies in the opportunities of technology adoption and to support investment and growth, this event will bring together a local manufacturing leader to discuss their company’s success in adopting new technology, together with experts from BDO Canada, Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), and RBC Royal who will provide specific advice to companies on how to invest in and grow their companies.

Energy Management Assistance Program (EMAP) 

The Energy Management Assistance Program (EMAP) is a designed to increase awareness and knowledge of energy management, energy management support programs and associated contacts that can assist small, medium and large sized manufacturers with reducing energy costs to become more competitive. In particular, CME will highlight the Industrial Conservation Initiative (ICI) opportunity and other incentives to support energy management.

About the Speakers

Mike Holden

Mike Holden, Chief Economist, CME

Based out of Calgary, Mike leads CME’s economics, research and analysis services and is a senior member of the national policy team. Mike’s responsibilities include ongoing economic analysis commentaries and publications, directing major research projects, and policy development.

In addition, Mike speaks frequently at industry and corporate events about the issues and challenges facing manufacturers and exporters.

Most importantly, Mike is also a member of the lead team in designing and executing CME’s Industrie 2030 initiative – a strategic plan to reinvigorate the Canadian manufacturing sector and to double manufacturing output and exports by the year 2030.

Prior to joining Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters, Mike was the senior economist at the Canada West Foundation where he managed the Foundation’s economic analysis and fiscal policy agenda. He also did extensive work on a number of major public policy issues in Western Canada such as energy development, market access, infrastructure investment and resource revenue savings. 

Glen Burston

Glen Burston, Hudson Boat Works

Glen came to Hudson in 2004 as the Operations Manager and has employed his Master of Engineering degree and now 25 years of manufacturing experience to transform the company from a small family business to a technology leader and innovator in the rowing shell market with over 90 employees and customers on six continents.

Glen is an outspoken supporter of Canadian manufacturing and believes commitment to innovation and technology is critical to business success. During his tenure, Hudson has grown its technical staff to include seven Engineers, a PhD of Bio-Mechanics and full time IT support.  The skills of this team  uniquely positions HUDSON in the global rowing market.

A previous member of the Canadian National rowing team, Glen remains an avid rower and general supporter of the sport.  

David Douglas

David Douglas, BDO

David is BDO’s Government Incentives leader in the Greater Toronto Area, with over 25 years of professional experience. His current consulting activities are directed towards assisting clients in maximizing the funding opportunities available through government grant and incentive programs. 

David has well-developed knowledge of the Canadian SR&ED environment and extensive experience in managing claims in a number of industry verticals. As a tax practitioner, David has worked with a number of private owner-managed businesses to maximize the benefits from the SR&ED incentive program through tax planning strategies. 

David has significant experience working with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) resolving complex SR&ED tax issues and is a member of the CPA Canada SR&ED Advisory Committee. He is a frequent speaker and writer on the SR&ED program, and regularly conducts SR&ED workshops to his clients providing them with current and relevant information regarding the program. He is also a regular presenter at the CPA SR&ED Advisory Symposium and at the Canadian Tax Foundation. He is also a contributing author to Taxation of Private Corporations and Their Shareholders (Fourth Edition).

Peter Lawler

Peter Lawler, BDC

Peter Lawler was appointed Executive Vice President, BDC Advisory Services in October 2016. 

In this role, he is responsible for the full range of non-financial services that BDC offers to entrepreneurs. 

Before assuming his current responsibilities, he was Senior Vice President, Financing and Consulting - Ontario. There, he was responsible for the overall growth of the Ontario market and played a key role in the development of strategies for the automotive, technology, and food and beverage sectors. In 2014, he was appointed Acting Senior Vice President, Credit Risk Management. For the following year, he was responsible for BDC's credit risk management and for the development and implementation of corporate strategies related to credit risk. 

Since joining BDC in 1991, Mr. Lawler has held a variety of roles in business centre management as well as credit risk management, including Vice President and Area Manager, Eastern and Northern Ontario, and Assistant Vice President, Credit Risk Management.
