CME applauds government's announcement of safeguard measures to prevent foreign steel from flooding Canadian market

Published by CME Staff on October 12, 2018

CME applauds the Government of Canada for imposing safeguard measures to guard against the diversion of foreign steel products from flooding the Canadian market. The Canadian government announced today a new 25% surtax on 7 steel products only if imports of those products exceed historic levels.

While today's announcement reflects what CME had asked for during the public consultation on steel safeguards, we urge the government to not lose sight of the 232 steel and aluminum tariff issue.

CME appreciates the government's efforts to mitigate the impacts of tariffs on Canadian manufacturers through the relief mechanisms. However, failure to address the tariffs in short order could have devastating impact on the industry and on the competitiveness of North American steel and aluminum manufacturers.

CME urges Canada and the US build on the momentum of the recently agreed upon USMCA, to resolve their differences with regards to steel aluminum imports and, to repeal all tariffs.
