Manufacturing sales decline in December 2012

Published by Stephanie Brooks on February 15, 2013

According to Statistics Canada's monthly survey of manufacturing for December 2012, sales declined to $48 billion, representing the largest drop since May 2009. More than half the decrease reflected lower sales in the transportation equipment sector, and other decreases were experienced in chemical, petroleum, coal product and fabricated metal manufacturing.

In total, sales declined in 16 out of 21 sectors, equaling 82 per cent of the manufacturing industry. The drop was a result of lower volumes of production, particularly in transportation equipment (nine per cent decrease), and motor vehicle assembly (15 per cent decline).

While six provinces reported lower sales, more than two-thirds of it was felt in Ontario.
