CME applauds Prime Minister's internship program funding

Published by Brad Fougere on May 02, 2014

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters applauds the announcement today that the government will earmark $40 million to support 3,000 paid internships for post-secondary graduates. By funding 75 per cent of the positions through the National Research Council’s Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP), specifically the IRAP Youth Employement Program, Prime Minister Harper ensures that critical skills shortages affecting industry will be addressed immediately.

“This funding will help support the efforts of Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters, helping businesses address the shortage of skilled workers needed to compete in the global market,” said President and CEO Jayson Myers.

Paid internships of six to 12 month durations will begin immediately under the plan and run until 2016. The internships will provide science, technology, engineering, mathematics and skilled trade work experience opportunities in high-demand fields for small- and medium-sized enterprises.
