Caterpillar shuts London plant

Published by Steve Coleman on February 03, 2012

The Cat didn't come back.

Caterpillar subsidiary Progress Rail shut the doors on the London Electro-Motive plant in London, Ont. Feb. 3 a month after locking out employees for refusing pay cuts of up to 50 per cent.

"It is regrettable that it has become necessary to close production operations at the London facility," Electro-Motive said in a statement, declining to answer further questions. "The cost structure of the operation was not sustainable and efforts to negotiate a new, competitive collective agreement were not successful."
