Canadian fuel cells to power Brazilian transit buses

Published by Steve Coleman on January 12, 2012

Ballard Power Systems says it has successfully shipped three fuel cells to Brazil to power public transit buses in Sao Paulo.

Fuel cells for three vehicles will be running conversions being refitted by TuttoTransporti of Brazil, that country's largest integrator of hybrid transit buses.

The vehicles are coming into the transit system under a development grant from the United Nations. Passengers will start seeing the vehicles in regular service sometime in 2012.

Ballard's fuel cells were part of a clean-up plan for the 11 million-resident city where 85 per cent of the three-million tons of greenhouse gases emitted annually come from vehicle traffic.
