China hunts for more iron ore sources

Published by Steve Coleman on August 18, 2011

The world's largest iron ore consumer is on the hunt for more autonomy in its supply lines.

China is making a push into iron ore projects, with a focus on west Africa, to find new sources for the 618 million tons of iron ore the country imported last year.

Most of the ore came from global miners BHP Bilton, Rio Tinto and Vale, but a Reuters news story suggests it may be difficult for China to cut its ties with the big three anytime soon.
