CME echoes Canadian and Mexican steel associations calls for the repeal of steel and aluminum tariff

Published by Stefi Proulx on September 07, 2018

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) is in full support of the Canadian and Mexican steel associations who are calling on negotiators to ensure U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum are eliminated in a new NAFTA deal. Recent reporting shows that the bi-lateral deal agreed upon by the American and Mexican negotiators do not address the tariffs.

"The steel and aluminum tariffs are unjustified and have no place between NAFTA partners," said Dennis Darby, President & CEO of CME. "Steel and aluminum manufacturers across North America have benefited greatly from free trade and have highly integrated supply chains. Failure to address the tariffs as part of the negotiations would have a devastating outcome on the industry and would affect the competitiveness of American, Canadian and, Mexican producers. We must also stand together with our regional allies to ensure international competitors do not reap the rewards of unfair anti-market trade practices. "

CME congratulates the Canadian government for the recent progress in the negotiation and calls on all three countries to continue with productive talks so an advantageous tri-lateral agreement can be reached.
