Food exports hit new highs

Published by Steve Coleman on May 08, 2012

With record levels of food exports last year as a backdrop, the Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance marked 15 years in business May 8.

Canadian farmers posted a new record in 2011, shipping $44 billion in agriculture, food and seafood. Part of that, the association says, was "significant increases" in markets like South Korea, Russia and India and record levels of pork going to other countries.

The association says many Canadian farmers ship anywhere from 50-85 per cent of their produce to foreign markets. CAFTA says it has been a long-time proponent of freer trade with other countries.
