BC Super tanker route gets green light

Published by Steve Coleman on February 23, 2012

Transport Canada has given a green light to oil super tankers travelling the British Columbia coastline to carry Alberta oil to market.

Enbridge's proposed $6.6 billion Northern Gateway pipeline carrying Oil Sands bitumen west to Kitimat, B.C. has received tentative approval, despite opposition from First Nations and environmental groups.

As a part of the review, Transport Canada says the oil company has to come up with better charts also has to do a better job of charting the waterways looking for unknown hazards and set weather limits for tanker traffic.

A Globe and Mail story takes a deeper look at the issue.
