Canada well positioned to meet its Greenhouse Gas Emission Target

Published by Stephanie Brooks on August 08, 2012

Canada is halfway towards meeting its greenhouse gas emission target by 2020, according to a new report from the federal government released today.

Canada's Emissions Trends outlines a projection of greenhouse gas emissions to 2020, including the most recent economic and emissions data and government actions to reduce emissions.

Environment Minister Peter Kent says it is through making significant progress in electricity and transportation, Canada's largest sources of emissions, that has helped reduce the country's overall emissions.

The Copenhagen Accord stipulates Canada's commitment to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 17 per cent from 2005 levels by 2020.

Sectors like oil and gas will be targeted for emissions reductions moving forward, according to the report.
