Canadian firm inks deal to renovate nuclear plant

Published by Steve Coleman on August 30, 2011

One of Canada's largest engineering firms has signed a deal that could add three decades to one of Argentina's two nuclear power plants.

SNC-Lavalin Group signed a US$444 million contract to renovate the Embalse Rio Tercero nuclear plant near the city of Córdoba in northern Argentina.

The agreement opens the door to the transfer of Canadian technology and assistance to help Argentina develop and manufacture nuclear reactor components, Mercopress news agency reported. The plant uses a Canadian-designed Candu reactor.

The nuclear plant first came on line 27 years ago and has a current production capacity of 648 megawatts.
