Federal, provincial governments want Navistar money returned

Published by Steve Coleman on August 09, 2011

Both the federal and provincial governments say they're looking at their legal options after Navistar International announced last week that it's closing its Chatham, Ont. production plant.

The Ontario government gave the heavy vehicle maker $32 million in financial aid in 2004-05 to help keep the plant in Chatham. The federal government contributed an estimated $31 million.

Of Ontario's money, $27 million went toward a diesel engine research and development centre at the University of Windsor. The other $5 million was spent in Chatham on an employee training program.

Queen's Park says in a Windsor Star story that it doesn't expect to recoup much of the money it spent trying to keep the big rig maker in Chatham.
