New Flyer enters into partnership to build lighter-duty buses

Published by Steve Coleman on May 07, 2012

Bus maker New Flyer Industries Inc. has teamed up with a British company to put low-floor, medium-duty buses on city streets across North America.

The Winnipeg bus company hopes to sell 1,000 buses a year to North American buyers in a partnership with Alexander Dennis Ltd. The British company has sold more than 16,000 mid-duty buses to customers across the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia since it first brought them to market.

New Flyer announced it will do the sales, marketing, manufacturing and aftermarket support for its new product. Alexander Dennis will look after the engineering, testing and prototype development work.

Plans call for the prototypes to be built this summer with a planned official launch to private operators and public transit companies. Fuel systems will include clean diesel, electric hybrid and compressed natural gas.
