Canada completes legal review of CETA with European Union

Published by Brad Fougere on February 29, 2016

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME), Canada’s largest and most influential business network, applauds the Canadian government for the successful legal review of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement with the European Union and calls on government to support export readiness programs and platforms like the Enterprise Canada Network.

"Opening the European market and its 500 million consumers to Canadian exports is a monumental accomplishment and will create countless opportunities for Canadian firms to find partners for product development, technology licensing, manufacturing, distribution and investment,” said CME President and CEO Jayson Myers

“Doing business outside of Canada can be a daunting experience for many Canadian exporters, especially for smaller companies,” Myers said. “CETA will address a majority of the tariff and non-tariff regulatory barriers to trade and investment that can make exporting so difficult.”

CME believes that the early forecasts of 80,000 new Canadian jobs looks to have been greatly underestimated. The most favoured nation status will have ranging benefits through the supply chains of, not just continental Europe, but, also through Africa, central Asia, China, India, the Asian Pacific and Latin America.

“Now that the negotiations and legal reviw of the text have completed, we urge all parties to ratify the deal in a timely manner to expedite the benefits of the free trade agreement,” said Myers. “In addition, it is vital that the government continues to support the preparations of Canadian companies to expand their businesses to sell into the European market.”
