Cigarette sales sag in January

Published by Steve Coleman on February 22, 2012

Cigarette makers saw 10.5 per cent of their sales go up in smoke in December.

Statistics Canada says the domestic cigarette-making industry suffered a further 0.9 per cent drop in January from December's numbers. The total cigarette industry decreased 10.5 per cent during the month to 1.6 billion, coincidentally, the same number Canadian manufacturers produced.

Closing inventories for the month said inventories were down 0.4 per cent to 2.4 billion cigarettes.
