CME extends congratulations to Premier McGuinty, urges action on the economy

Published by Derek Lothian on October 07, 2011

TORONTO (October 7, 2011) - Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) congratulates Premier Dalton McGuinty and the Ontario Liberal Party on forming a third consecutive government, but urges swift action to ensure the economy is a top priority in the 40th sitting of the Legislative Assembly.

On behalf of the one million Ontarians employed in the manufacturing and exporting sectors, CME has submitted a five-point plan to create a more globally competitive province and protect the standard of living its residents expect and enjoy.

"This is a critical time as the economy emerges from deep recession," explains Ian Howcroft, vice president, CME Ontario. "We must continually strive to improve Ontario as the preferred destination for investment; and we ask all MPPs heading to Queen's Park to work with job creators to institute progressive policies and a sound strategy for growth."

The plan outlines the need for stable, competitively priced energy; lower taxes for companies investing in new products and technologies; increased investment in people and skills; streamlined regulations; and, expanded infrastructure.

"We commend the government for its past commitment to business and workers alike," says Howcroft. "However, we need to do more and move forward. These recommendations address the very foundation of Canada's new economy, and lay a vision for Ontario that will solidify our position as a leader on the world stage."
