Court settles Bud-ing dispute

Published by Steve Coleman on September 23, 2011

They may never be best Buds, but they do have to agree to get along.

A European court ruled Thursday that Anheuser-Busch and Czech brewer Budvar can both continue using the word "Bud" in their advertising.

Budvar arrived in the United Kingdom in 1973. Budweiser first appeared in U.K pubs a year later. Both were given the right to use the trademark in 2000.

Anheuser-Busch applied to the United Kingdom Trade Marks Registry in 2005 to have sole possession of the name and lost its final appeal at the EU's Court of Justice in Luxembourg on Sept. 22.
