CME discusses innovation policy with Minister Goodyear

Published by Stephanie Brooks on May 31, 2012

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) met with Minister of State for Science and Technology, the Hon. Gary Goodyear, as part of its Innovation Policy Day today to discuss the importance of direct support to R&D in Canada.

CME advocated for the importance of innovation programs like the NRC-IRAP and provided support to refocusing NRC’s mandate towards business needs.

Strong concerns were expressed regarding the direction the government is taking with the SR&ED tax credit and the imbalance between support offered to large and small companies.

Further, CME discussed the growing imbalance between support for academic research and support for private sector commercialization of research. The last federal budget moved funds from the SR&ED tax credit to the Canada Foundation for Innovation, which is a funding program solely for academic research. While CME is in favour of a stronger academic research infrastructure, it should not be pursued at the expense of the private sector.
