GM puts Volt production on hold

Published by Steve Coleman on March 09, 2012

The Chevrolet Volt has taken a bit of jolt after disappointing sales.

General Motors Co. says it's suspending production of the hybrid passenger car for five weeks to let demand catch up to the number of vehicles produced.

GM plans to idle the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant from March 19 - April 23, temporarily parking 1,300 workers. The company sold 7,671 Volts last year, but had hoped to sell 10,000 of the vehicles.

The car has been rated at 90 miles per gallon by the EPA. The vehicle uses a 400-pound battery pack that can travel 35 miles on a charge before a gasoline engine kicks in to recharge the power pack.
