Canadians get "gouged" at the Windsor, Detroit border, NDP says

Published by Steve Coleman on January 17, 2012

Windsor West MP Brian Masse has torn a strip off both the Ambassador Bridge and the Windsor Tunnel for "gouging" Canadians crossing into the United States.

The NDP Member of Parliament representing the riding where the bridge sits also blasted the federal government for not doing something about the extra money Canadians pay when they use their own currency to cross the border.

Travellers coming from the US side to Canada pay Cdn$4.75 and US$4 to use either the bridge or the tunnel.

In Windsor, the rates to use the tunnel are Cdn$4.50 and US$4. The bridge rates are the same on both sides of the border.

Meanwhile, both dollars have been at, or near, parity for the last two years.
