Alberta gives coal plant all-clear

Published by Steve Coleman on August 17, 2011

The Alberta government has given the all-clear to a coal-fired power plant expected to produce twice the greenhouse gases of a natural-gas powered generation site.

Maxim Power will be allowed to start construction on a $1.7 billion expansion of its Grande Cache, Alta. plant without having to sequester carbon dioxide.

Environmental groups have panned plans for the 500 MW HR Milner Expansion Project and took the proposal to court, saying the project was rushed through the system before new federal rules on carbon emissions come into effect.

At least one environmental group has said it's considering a further court challenge.
