Korean free trade details tabled in House

Published by Brad Fougere on June 12, 2014

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) applauded the Government of Canada for tabling the text related to the free trade agreement with the Republic of Korea in Parliament today.

"This is an important step towards the implementation of an agreement that is Canada’s first with an Asian economy," said CME President and CEO Jayson Myers. "This is a first step in gaining much more open access for Canadian exports across the Pacific."

"Implementation of this agreement is an important step towards ensuring Canadian exporters compete on a level playing field with other countries who already have agreements in place,” said Myers. “Most favoured nation status, the expedited dispute resolution settlement procedures and liberalization of investment and services, procurement and temporary entry of business representatives all make this an important agreement to ratify."

"It is an important time to remind governments that this agreement must make Canada a more attractive destination for investors and manufacturers, create jobs and opportunities for Canadians and level the playing field for Canadian businesses making them more competitive on the global stage."

CME looks forward to reviewing the details of the text and working with the government to ensure Canadian exporters are supported in their efforts to access this important market.
