North American manufacturers have a good August

Published by Steve Coleman on October 18, 2011

August was a good month to be a manufacturer - on both sides of the international border.

The US Census Bureau reported Oct. 14 that the combined value of wholesale and retail sales, combined with manufacturers' shipments, was $1.2 trillion for August. The number equals a 0.3 per cent increase from July and 11.8 per cent more year-over-year.

US manufacturing inventories were up 0.5 per cent to $1.5 trillion from July to August and rose 10.5 percent from the same time a year earlier.

The news was just as good for Canadian manufacturers in August, according to Statistics Canada. Manufacturing sales climbed 1.4 per cent to $47.6 billion in August, the highest level since October 2008. Inventory levels edged up 0.3 per cent to $63.5 billion in August.
