Wholesale trade sales rise in May

Published by Stephanie Brooks on July 19, 2012

With sales up in eight provinces, Canada's wholesale sales rose 0.9 per cent in May to almost $50 billion, according to numbers released from Statistics Canada today.

The largest increase came from the machinery, equipment and supplies sector, which grew 2.6 per cent. This was mainly a result of higher sales in computer, communications equipment, and the supplies industry.

The second biggest gain was seen in the food, beverage and tobacco industry - a result of higher sales in food, making up nearly 90 per cent of the sector.

Wholesale sales in the motor vehicle and parts subsector advanced 1.6 per cent for the month, due to higher sales in the motor vehicle industry.
