EU approves Google deal

Published by Steve Coleman on February 13, 2012

Google Inc. has received the EU's guarded approval for the purchase of Motorola Mobility and it's collection of 17,000 patents and 7,500 pending patents.

While the regulatory body's approval for the purchase was unconditional, the EU Competition Commission says it plans to keep a close eye on any fallout from the deal.

One decision that could give Google problems in the EU would be a move to link any of the patents to its Android mobile phone operating system. The possibility wasn't enough for the regulatory body to block the move, however.

Chinese regulators are expected to decide by March 20 whether or not they'll approve the $12.5 billion purchase or send it back for a third round of study.
