Enbridge asked to provide explanation for pipeline-reversal plans

Published by Steve Coleman on October 18, 2011

The National Energy Board wants Enbridge Inc. to explain how an Ontario oil pipeline reversal fits into its big picture, including plans to export Alberta crude.

The Line 9 Phase 1 project running between Montreal and Sarnia, Ont. is has been touted as a way of getting oil from Alberta to Quebec and east coast refineries for further processing.

Environmentalists say the plan is a ploy to resurrect old plans for the Trailbreaker pipeline moving bitumen from the oil sand to the U.S. Atlantic Seaboard.

It will be up to the NEB to decide what level of review the plans to reverse flow on the Ontario pipeline will receive. Reuters says Enbridge has been asked to provide an answer by Oct. 21.
