Reduced premiums should coincide EI reform: CME

In the wake of announced changes to the federal Employment Insurance (EI) program, Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) is calling on the government to reduce EI rates for employers and employees to attract and retain skilled workers in a highly competitive labour market.   

CME supports the government’s actions on improving the EI system to help qualified individuals fill available jobs in their local labour markets and increase the availability of domestic labour that Canadian businesses need. Today, there are hundreds of thousands of unfilled jobs across Canada in all sectors of the economy. Each unfilled position represents a lost economic opportunity for Canada.

“The efforts to help unemployed Canadians find jobs quickly are imperative at a time when major projects like shipbuilding, oil and gas, nuclear and hydro-electricity and mining continue to grow across the country,” says CME’s Vice President of National Policy, Mathew Wilson.

However, CME believes these changes should also incorporate improvements to the overall management of the EI system, including a reduction in EI premiums. Lowering the rates would benefit employees and employers equally.

“If fewer Canadians are relying on EI because they have found employment, which is the ultimate goal of the program changes, there will be less of a financial burden on the system,” says Wilson. “As such, this is an opportune time to reduce the EI tax rate and return more money to Canadian companies and consumers.”

CME recently launched a job and skills-matching portal that reflects the government’s goal of improving labour market information and finding qualified applicants for available manufacturing positions. iCME.ca showcases jobs that ensure both graduates and current workers transition smoothly into the industry.
