Online demand for employees grows

Published by Steve Coleman on October 28, 2011

Even with fewer job postings in the last three months, online demand for employees surged 15 per cent in the last year.

The Monster Employment Index Canada says more companies were looking for staff, even with fewer of them looking for extra hands in the third quarter of 2011.

"Online recruitment remained significantly higher on a year-over-year basis, with Q3 showing a 15-per-cent increase from the 2010 period amid particularly strong activity in manufacturing and processing jobs and primary industry occupations," said Peter Gilfillan, senior vice president of international sales and general manager of Monster Canada, in a news release.

The company says most job categories tracked by the index showed declines for the quarter, but were up compared to the same time last year. The index showed gains in most provinces and all of the major Canadian cities tracked.

Processing, manufacturing and utilities were the biggest performers for the year, up 113 per cent in the third quarter.
