UK manufacturers call for more promotion of manufacturing jobs at school level

Published by Steve Coleman on August 19, 2011

UK business leaders are calling for the government to give students more incentive to get into manufacturing-related professions on the heels of another slip in Britain's manufacturing numbers.

The UK's Office for National Statistics said manufacturing output fell 0.4 per cent in June compared with May.

Technician and engineering jobs are key to getting the island's manufacturing sector back into a leading role in its economy, said Sir James Dyson. While his company's products are assembled abroad, the design work that goes into them is done at home. An estimated 80 per cent of his sales are made overseas, says a story on the Guardian web site.
