CME Welcomes Government of Canada Actions to Strengthen Ties with Brazil

Published by Steve Coleman on August 08, 2011

Canadian Manufacturers & Exports welcomes the latest moves by the Prime Minister and Minister of International Trade in expanding export markets for Canadian industry.

"Brazil is an important trading partner for Canadian industry with businesses of all sizes taking advantage of Brazil's large and growing market and investing in a wide variety of sectors of their economy," said CME President and CEO Jayson Myers. "This ranges from mining and natural resource development to the high-tech sectors such as aerospace, automotive and consumer products. Similarly, Brazilian companies have invested in Canada and export many products to Canadian consumers."

While the business connections are strong today, they could be much stronger. In many sectors, even though the Brazil market is open, it is heavily protected by high tariffs. Canadian companies are often shut out of an important and growing market.

We are pleased that the Prime Minister and Minister have recognized the importance of this market for our members and Canadian industry as a whole and are taking steps to strengthen existing business relationships and expand new opportunities.

In the long run, we hope that today's announcements will lead to a broader and deeper trade relationship, including a free trade agreement that will further open Brazil's market through the elimination of the current tariff wall.
