U.S. sub-committee sets guidelines for shale gas development

Published by Steve Coleman on August 11, 2011

A U.S. sub-committee has released its recommendations for tapping into shale gas development.

While the rock already supplies 30 per cent of America's natural gas, committee members have come up with a list of four recommendations to ensure the industry sticks to best practices.

The report follows three months of work with industry experts, environmental advocates, academics and former state regulators.

Recommendations in the report include:

  •  Making information about shale gas production operations more accessible to the public
  •  Immediate and longer-term actions to reduce environmental and safety risks of shale gas operations, with a particular focus on protecting air and water quality
  •  Creation of a Shale Gas Industry Operation organization committed to continuous improvement of best operating practices
  •  Research and development (R&D) to improve safety and environmental performance
