End of the line for Orion

Published by Steve Coleman on April 26, 2012

The last stop for Daimler AG's Orion bus-making plant in Mississauga will occur sometime in the next year.

The German-based company has announced plans to shut the doors on the manufacturing plant, citing slow North American transit bus sales, uncompetitive costs and few export opportunities.

Daimler AG's decision will eliminate an estimated 200 active workers' jobs and those of 200 more laid-off employees.

A Globe & Mail story says the number of heavy-duty buses sold in North America fell 13 per cent last year to 5,154, from the 5,933 sold in 2010. Manufacturers delivered 6,032 in 2009.
