In the run up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, China was the destination of choice for companies looking to do more for less. The sprint by the rest of the world to factories and special economic zones along the country’s coastal regions was China’s PhD in capitalism after three decades of devoted study.
Four years after the Olympic flame flickered out, operations in China are still going strong for most foreign entities; but the landscape has fundamentally changed yet again. The rush to the coast and the five economic zones stretching from the island of Hainan in the South China Sea to Xiamen in the north, has done an about-face.
