Winnipeg to host Canada’s first Employee Ownership Conference

Taking ownership over one’s work is a popular management catch phrase but what happens when employees truly own part of the business they work for? Participants of an upcoming conference will have an opportunity to learn first-hand as Winnipeg hosts the 2015 Canadian Employee Ownership Conference June 3-5. This 2-day inaugural event will hear from successful companies who have implemented Employee Share Ownership Plans (ESOPs). ESOPs are formal plans that allow employees to participate in the long-term value growth of their business through the purchase of an ownership interest. The conference aims to raise awareness of the underutilized business model and will feature international and national subject experts. Two Winnipeg ESOP companies will be speaking: Friesens Corporation, Canada’s leading book manufacturer with 500 employee shareholders, and Protegra, whose team of more than 50 help clients create software-enabled solutions utilizing agile and state-of-the-art methods and technologies. “Friesens and its employees have benefited significantly from its broad-based ownership model. For nearly 50 years, employee ownership has been a cornerstone in aligning the interest of management and staff and has been a key ingredient in our long-running success,” says Curwin Friesen, CEO Friesens Corporation. “Protegra’s environment is characterized by respect, collaboration and fairness. The core of Protegra’s success is our people. Protegra is driven by passionate, creative professionals who love what they do and excel in a culture that values teamwork, empowerment and leadership,” said Wadood Ibrahim, Protegra CEO. A number of hallmark Canadian companies have ESOPs including WestJet, PCL Constructors, and Ledcor. Sponsors of the 2015 Canadian Employee Ownership Conference include POS Bio-Sciences, Dale & Lessmann LLP, ESOP Builders, Friesens, PCL Constructors Canada, Acrylon Plastics, and, Canadian Western Bank.
